Each of the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) shares the same beautiful crystal-clear Caribbean waters, but they each offer a totally unique experience. Choosing the right one for your next escape can be tricky, but don't worry - I've got you! In this guide, we'll explore the bustling energy of St. Thomas (middle image), the serene natural beauty of St. John (image on the right), and the rich historical charm of St. Croix (image on the left) to help you find your perfect getaway!

Exploring the US Virgin Islands: Which One Is Right for You?

Now that we've covered the basics, it's time for the exciting part! As I mentioned before each of the US Virgin Islands has its own distinct vibe and attractions. Let's explore each one and discover your ideal paradise! 

St. Thomas 

If you love to shop, eat, and party, St. Thomas is the place for you! Picture vibrant city life, beautiful beaches, and historic charm, all in one—this is St. Thomas! From duty-free shopping, diverse cuisine, and a vibrant nightlife, St. Thomas is the heartbeat of the USVI! It's home to the USVI capital, Charlotte Amalie, and a busy cruise port hub, so expect plenty of energy and excitement! For a more relaxed vibe, check out Red Hook—a charming area that offers a quieter, laid-back experience with local dining and waterfront views!

Things to See & Do in St. Thomas

Have you ever dreamed of observing the underwater seaworld from 15 feet below the sea, swimming with dolphins, and getting up close and personal with sea lions, all in the same day!?! If so, the Coral World Ocean Park is for you! How about visiting the oldest fort in the USVI, built as a lookout for pirates!?! If so, visit Fort Christian (pictured below) and climb the 99 steps! Not exciting enough? How about zip-lining through a rainforest? These are only a few of the activities you'll find on St. Thomas! 

Breaktaking Views in St. Thomas

Are you a sucker for great views like I am? If so, you're in luck! From Paradise Point, to Mountain Top, to Valdemar Hill, and Drake's Seat (pictured below), there is no shortage of breathtaking views on St. Thomas! From Paradise Point you can see it all - Charlotte Amalie, the harbor, surrounding islands, and on a clear day you can even see Puerto Rico!!!

Beaches in St. Thomas: Vibrant & Lively

Now to my favorite part, the beaches! St. Thomas boasts some of the most beautiful and lively beaches in the Caribbean! From the famous Magens Bay (pictured below) with its soft white sand and calm turquoise waters to Coki Beach filled with vibrant coral reefs to Sapphire Beach—a haven for water sports enthusiasts—St. Thomas is full of unique beaches to explore! If you're looking for beaches bustling with activities, St. Thomas is the place for you! 

St. John

If you got anxious just reading about all the hustle and bustle of St. Thomas, don't worry, I have the perfect island for you! Known for its tranquility and natural beauty, St. John offers a serene escape full of lush landscapes, stunning hiking trails, and some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean! With two thirds of the island protected as Virgin Islands National Park, its a haven for nature lovers, filled with outdoor adventures, peaceful beaches, and breathtaking scenery! 

Things to See & Do in St. John

If you're a hiking enthusiast, St. John is the place to be! With over 30 hiking trails, you're sure to find one that'll steal your heart! Be sure to check out Reef Bay Trail - a 3 mile long trail that takes you through tropical forests, past renenants of an old sugar mill plantation, ancient petroglyphs, a 40 ft waterfall and ends up at the stunning Reef Bay Beach

For a taste of local culture, visit the lively, charming town of Cruz Bay. Here you'll find colorful shops, art galleries, and delicious cuisine! For a quieter experience, venture over to Coral Bay where you can enjoy a more laid back vibe, local restaurants, and beautiful views! 

If you're looking for an unforgettable snorkeling experience, head to Watermelon Cay! It's one of the best snorkeling spots and most photographed area in the Virgin Islands National Park! You can there by hiking the Leinster Bay Trail (about a half mile hike). From there it's just a short swim to the cay where you will be greeted by vibrant coral reefs full of colorful fish, sea turtles, and the occasional sting ray!

Beaches in St. John: Tranquil Escapes

Now, for what makes St.John a must visit destination, its breathtakingly serene beaches! If you’re seeking peaceful beaches surrounded by untouched nature, St. John is the place for you! The most famous of these beaches is Trunk Bay (pictured below) - complete with soft white sand, crystal clear waters, and an underwater snorkeling trail - it's like swimming in a giant, tropical aquarium! And the view is absolutely breathtaking!

For a long quiet stroll on the beach check out Cinnamon Cay, surrounded by lush vegetation and providing more breathtaking views! Maho Bay Beach is perfect for families, with shallow waters and tons of opportunities to spot sea turtles! Hawksnest Beach is another gem, known for its excellent snorkeling and picturesque views! 

If you're looking for a beach that combines beauty with a bit of intrigue, check out Gibney Beach, also known as Oppenheimer Beach, as it was once owned by the famous physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. His house still stands and has been converted into a community center. Surrounded by lush coconut palm trees, in a picturesque off-the-beaten-path setting, this beach is perfect for a peaceful retreat!

St. Croix

If St. Thomas sounds like a bit much for you but St. John sounds a bit to tranquil, St.Croix may be the perfect island for you! With more to explore than St. John but a more relaxed vibe than St. Thomas, St. Croix offers an intriguing blend of vibrant culture, rich history, and natural beauty. Explore charming Danish architecture, enjoy lively local festivals, and relax on picturesque beaches surrounded by lush landscapes!

History & Culture

St. Croix is a treasure trove of history and culture! If you're a history enthusiast, this is the island for you! Wander through the charming towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted to discover unique colonial architecture and fascinating historic sites such as Fort Frederiksted (pictured below)! Step back in time at the Estate Whim Plantation Museum, or savor the island’s famous spirits with a tour of the Cruzan Rum Distillery.

For a deeper dive into the island’s past, visit the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, where you can explore the landing site of Christopher Columbus and learn about the island’s rich history.

Nature & Water Activities

St. Croix is also a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Hike the Carambola Tide Pools Trail for stunning views and a refreshing dip in natural tide pools, or head to Point Udall, the easternmost point of the United States, for breathtaking sunrise views.

For water lovers, snorkel at Buck Island Reef National Monument, one of the best spots in the Caribbean. For a unique and thrilling water adventure, take a ride on a Jet Car —yes, you read that right, JET CARS! Check out VI Exotic Watersports for Jet Car rentals and tours! Kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing along the island’s stunning coastline are also popular options.

Beaches in St. Croix: Best of Both Worlds

Unlike the bustling beaches of St. Thomas or the serene escapes of St. John, St. Croix offers a mix of beaches to suit every mood—from lively and social to peaceful and remote.

Head to Rainbow Beach for a vibrant atmosphere with bars, restaurants, and water sports, or unwind at Sandy Point, a tranquil spot perfect for relaxation and turtle-watching. If you're up for an adventure, Cane Bay Beach (pictured below) offers world-class snorkeling at The Wall, a famous underwater drop-off that draws divers from around the globe!
