Traveling to the US Virgin Islands? Here's What You Need to Know

Getting There

The USVI is easily accessible with major airports on both St. Thomas and St.Croix. Direct flights are available from several U.S. cities. St.John is only accessible by ferry, so if you plan to stay on St.John fly into St.Thomas airport and take a ferry from there.

Travel Requirements

U.S. Citizens do not need a passport to visit the USVI. However, as of May 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID for all domestic flights.

Transportation

Car Rentals - Renting a jeep is one of the most common ways of getting around the USVI. Keep in mind they drive on the left side of the road here, and some roads can be narrow and winding.

Taxis- Taxis are also readily available on all three islands, but can be expensive for long distances and are often shared rides. If you're visiting St.Thomas or St.John consider an open-air safari taxi for a fun and unique experience!

Ferries - The only way to access St.John is by ferry. Ferry rides are also available for transportation between St. Thomas and St. Croix.

Seaplanes - If ferries are not your thing, consider taking a seaplane from St.Thomas to St.Croix or vice versa for a quick and exciting way to island hop!

Buses - The USVI bus system, VITRAN, is available on all three islands. However, the schedules are infrequent and do not reach all areas of the island.

Weather & Hurricanes

The USVI boasts a tropical climate year-round with temperatures averaging about 80 degrees Fahrenheit. However, hurricanes are a concern. Hurricane season runs from about mid-May through the end of November, with an average of about 6 hurricanes per season.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal weather conditions, plan your trip between December and April. Just keep in mind this is the busiest and most expensive time to visit. For cheaper rates and fewer crowds plan your visit between May and November.

Language & Currency

As you may have guessed, since the USVI is an American territory, the official language is English and the official currency is the US dollar. Major credit cards are accepted at most establishments. Carrying some cash is recommended for smaller vendors and tips.

Safety

The USVI is generally considered a safe place for tourists with St.John ranking the safest of all the islands. Like anywhere in the world, crime is still possible, so it's recommended to follow basic safety precautions.

Water Quality

As of 2024, it is not safe to drink tap water on St.Croix due to a high amount of lead and copper found in the water. The tap water on St.Thomas and St.John is considered safe to drink.
